5.3 EARTHQUAKE ROCKS SOUTHWEST TRINIDAD

An earthquake measuring magnitude approximately 5.3 on the Richter Scale, was felt throughout Trinidad at 12:24am, this morning.

The Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies, via their Automated Earthquake Location Detector, identified the Epicenter to be approximately Lat. 10.11N deg and Long 61.98W deg. at a depth of 10km. That location places the Epicenter in the Gulf of Paria just NorthWest off Icacos Point.

Residents who felt the tremor immediately took to Social Media giving their account. Persons from as far as Diego Martin reported feeling the quake. However, persons residing within the southwestern peninsula, from Icacos to Point Fortin, would have felt it the strongest. In one humurous instance, one Facebook friend told another, to “go back to sleep and stop shaking her bed”.

The quake lasted less than a minute and no initial reports of damage were noticed to be documented at this time, via Social Media.
