SAT MAHARAJ HAS DIED

Satnarayan Maharaj, Secretary General of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Saba, the most established representative organization for Hindus in Trinidad and Tobago has died. He was 88 years old.

About a week ago, Maharaj was reported to have suffered a stroke while at his Champs Fleur home and was hospitalized at the Medical Associates Private Hospital, in a serious condition.

Sat was very integral in shaping the current Cultural and Political climate which currently exists in Trinidad and Tobago. He was very controversial, but always stood his ground. Standing up for what he preached and probably believed and was not afraid to defend even his most unpopular positions.

Maharaj was seen by many as not just an advocate for Hindus, but also for the rights of East Indians living in Trinidad and Tobago and was once labelled as the most popular Hindu outside of India.

On April 16 this year, Sat became the center of an investigation by the Trinidad and Tobago Police which stemmed from comments made by him on Radio Jaagriti which was considered to be breaching Section 13 of the Sedition Act, Chapter 11:04. He later sued the state over the said sedition act claiming it infringes upon citizens constitutional rights of freedom, thought and expression, along with freedom of the press and freedom of association and assembly.

Funeral arrangements are currently being made by his family and will be made known to the public when finalised.
