ARE WE GETTING HORN AGAIN?

Will Trinidad Soca Music once again leave its homeland for a second consecutive year and fall into the loving arms of another, taking one of the coveted Soca Monarch crown to another Island? Are we going to be “Horned Again”.

Shirlan George .. Skinny Banton

Last year, Mr Killer (Hollice Jonah Mapp) easily ran away with the Power Soca Monarch crown, to Grenada, with his mega hit “Run With It” (Pick up something). This year, the Power Monarch for now, seems to be returning home. However, the groovy category appears to be heading to Grenada also.

Leading the pack for the Groovy competition category this year, is Shirlan George, known as Skinny Banton, who, though born in Trinidad, moved to and now resides in the island of Carriacou. His song “Wrong Again”, is undoubtedly the most played 2020 Soca on the local airwaves currently and also in the fetes. The song plays on a story telling scenario of the singer asking what did he do wrong to deserve being horned (a term used locally to describe when a spouse is being unfaithful to their partner).

George, skillful used tasks with associated actions to create a sort of visual element while pleading his plight. He said, “d bush I cut it”, “the garden I fork it”, however, his spouse still went with another guy and therein lies the the real essence of the song: him asking, what did he do “Wrong Again”?

The skillfully crafted song, has Trinidadians, both male and female singing along word for word anytime it’s played.

This year’s Soca Monarch competition seems set for favourites to easily walk away with their titles. Iwer George is comfortably poised for a win this year in the Power Category and Skinny Banton for the Groovy
